Specify 6.1.08 Released

Specify 6.1.08 was released today (29 March 2010) and is available on the Specify Software Project web site download page. Current Specify installations will automatically be offered the update upon starting Specify. This release makes a small number of database schema enhancements, and fixes various bugs reported by users especially with the Specify Uploader and with resource importing and exporting.

Specify 6.1.08 also supports formulaic construction of taxon name strings with taxon author names and determination qualifiers (sensu, vide, cf., vel aff., etc.) for use in printing specimen labels. A performance enhancement brings locality data more rapidly to collection object data forms for database server installations.

This Specify 6.1.08 update release will modify the table and field definitions of your existing database. To effect those changes, Specify must use the 'root' user credentials of the MySQL installation (we call them the Specify "IT user" ID and password). The Specify 'Master' user account and regular Specify user accounts do not have permission to update MySQL database structures. The downloadable Updater for this release will prompt for the "IT user" name and password, be sure to have that information when you download and run this update; without the account information the update will not run.

If you operate Specify with multiple workstations and a shared server database, the initial installation of this release on a workstation, with the Specify "IT User" credentials used, will update the Specify database on the server. All other workstations must then upgrade to the same release level (6.1.08) in order to access the newly updated database.
