Settling Down

This week, the Project is returning to normalcy as the adrenaline rush from shipping Specify 6 attenuates. We are completing the exquisitely complex Specify Converter application, which we will run in-house to convert Specify 5 databases to Specify 6. We have also have a preliminary plan for Specify 6's HTML and XML interfaces, for web sites and for serving data to community portals, respectively. If you have suggestions for usage scenarios and requirements that we should consider for the Specify web interfaces, consider making a deposit in the new Suggesters Forum. We hope to have the web interfaces ready for a 6.1 update by the end of August. We will define a minimum set of requirements for the web interfaces, and then prioritize the others for incremental upgrades later. We will shortly add a blank Specify 6 database and an SQL script on the Download page for sites that have MySQL expertise and want to install their first blank database on a server - not on the workstation running the Specify Wizard. We will update the Specify Wizard to allow sites to skip the creation of blank database on the workstation. We are also working on the redesign of our internal processes for converting data sets and tracking progress of those conversions. We have separated the trunk of the code base from the branches which are the source of our public updates; we will continue to apply bug fixes to both and invest in larger changes and enhancements in the trunk.
